Pomegranate – Le Grenadier – is an other one of these Trees of Life I love. Actually, I would be perfectly happy with making mosaics of Eyes and Trees only !

The Pomegranate tree is an important tree in the Mythologies of the ancient world. Greek Lore has it that the Beautiful Persephone, daughter of Demeter and Zeus

one day got in trouble with her husband Hades for having swallowed 3 grains of the crimson fruit…

My Pomegranate tree is inspired by an enluminure from a XIIIth century Persian Manuscript.

On April15, 2015, I first laid the model on my working table.

As usual, I was going with my reverse method, the mosaic is built upside down, you do not really see what you are doing until you flip the whole piece…

Slowly and steadily I started to lay my small glass tesserae…

The mosaicist progresses slowly at the beginning. Once a few rows of tesserae have been laid one can go faster.

On April 30, I had well progressed on the tree itself. Pomegranate was going to be my first “glass only” mosaic. An example of the trickiness of working reverse method can be seen here : the dull greyish pieces on this picture are actually the back of bright green mirror material.

In May, I started to work the borders…

Because Pomegranate was going to France, I built it on a mesh you can see on the above picture.

This technique reduces the amount of weight of the mosaic, an important point when it comes to transportation costs.

On May 15, all tesserae had been laid !

On July 14, Pomegranate, and 3 other pieces, arived in France in my suitcases…

And I proceeded to their completion in my French Studio of Saint Valery sur Somme !

On July 27, Pomegranate in the old town of Saint Valery.
