I created this mosaic portrait of as a tribute to the life and work of Miura Takeyuki Hidefusa, Hanshi 20th Grand Master of Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaijutsu, an ancient traditional  Japanese school of fencing.

When I am not building my mosaics, I spend quite some times practicing and teaching Martial Arts, among them Japanese Fencing also known as Iaijutsu, Iaido, and/or Kenjutsu, Kendo.

This project was financed by a Kickstarter Campaign. – Each supporter receives a reward for his contribution.

The original picture was the favorite of Miura Hanshi. Here he is practicing Tameshigiri by cutting with his sword free standing rolled sheets of paper.

Miura Hanshi was well known for his quasi supernatural ability to cut. This picture was displayed at the entrance of his Dojo in Osaka.

Miura Hanshi left us in 2012. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to personally meet him, but I practice and study with many people who did.

I presented the mosaic to Carl Long Hanshi, head of the KNBK organization on November 21, 2015, in front of a group of 60 + Martial Arts students and instructors training together in Pennsylvania.

A few times every year, I take commission orders. If you are interested in a custom mosaic portrait or an other type of mosaic for your home or office, please visit my Commission page.
