Baobab Tree of Life is a commission piece for one of my collectors.
Becky is a long time friend, and a fervent gardener and lover of trees.
She asked me during the 2016 summer to design a beautiful mosaic tree for her Kitchen.
I came up with several designs, she chooses on one of them and I went to work !
I built Baobab according to my preferred Reverse Method.
I build the mosaic upside down, then glue a framed concrete board on top of it.
Once the mortar is set, I flip the mosaic, peel the model from it and clean it up.
Well, actually it is a little more complicated, but it is close to this.
And so on a beautiful November day, I invited some of my friend to help me flip 3 different mosaics and Becky actually got to flip her own mosaic !
This flipping operation always is an emotional moment, because this is when you see the mosaic for the very first time !
I was able to use some new iridescent glass tiles for this Baobab…
Look at the depth of these glasses and granites.
I have used 7 different hues of blue for the sky, and the result is fantastic under a changing light !
