Mosaic portrait of Medusa, one of the three gorgons.
Medusa had living snakes in place of hair. She was beautiful and scary and anyone who looked upon her was turned to stone.
She ended up beheaded by the Greek hero Perseus. Her head retained its ability to turn onlookers to stone, which turned out convenient as a weapon to fight various dragons and crooked politicians. Tired of it after a while, Perseus gave it to the goddess Athena who placed it on her shield. In classical antiquity, Medusa’s head was very often represented in splendid mosaics.
This is my second Medusa portrait mosaic. I build the previous one in 2011.
